ACCESSIBILITY

Last Reviewed: March 2026

WCAG 2.1 Level AA

Good Morning Murfreesboro aims to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA across all pages.

Actively Maintained

Keyboard Navigation

Every interactive element is reachable and operable using a keyboard alone — no mouse required.

Screen Reader Support

ARIA landmarks, labels, and live regions are used throughout so screen readers can navigate and announce content correctly.

Color & Contrast

Text and interactive elements meet WCAG AA contrast ratios. Color is never the sole means of conveying information.

Semantic HTML

Pages use proper heading structure, landmark regions, and semantic elements so assistive technologies can interpret content correctly.

Mobile Accessible

The site is fully responsive and touch-friendly, with tap targets sized appropriately for mobile and tablet users.

Reduced Motion

Animations and transitions are suppressed for users who have enabled the "prefer reduced motion" system setting.

Our Commitment

Good Morning Murfreesboro is committed to ensuring our website is accessible to everyone — including people with visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive disabilities. We believe that community content should be available to every member of the Murfreesboro community, regardless of ability.

Accessibility is not a checkbox for us — it is an ongoing commitment. We actively review our site, address issues as they are identified, and work to improve the experience for all users.

Standards We Follow

This website aims to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities.

WCAG 2.1 Level AA is the current standard referenced by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act for digital accessibility compliance.

We also follow best practices from the ARIA Authoring Practices Guide for interactive components.

What We Do

Across all pages of this website, we implement the following accessibility features:

  • Skip navigation link — A "Skip to main content" link appears at the top of every page, allowing keyboard users to bypass the navigation menu
  • Keyboard accessibility — All interactive elements (links, buttons, forms, modals, tab panels) are fully operable by keyboard
  • Visible focus indicators — A gold focus ring is displayed on all focused elements so keyboard users always know where they are on the page
  • ARIA landmarks — Every page uses header, nav, main, footer, and other semantic landmarks so screen readers can navigate efficiently
  • ARIA labels and descriptions — Interactive elements without visible text labels use aria-label or aria-labelledby attributes
  • Form accessibility — All form inputs have associated labels, required fields are marked, and error messages use aria-live regions
  • Alt text — All meaningful images include descriptive alt text; decorative images use empty alt attributes
  • Heading structure — Pages use a logical heading hierarchy (H1 → H2 → H3) to help screen reader users navigate content
  • Color contrast — Text meets a minimum 4.5:1 contrast ratio against its background (AA standard)
  • Responsive design — The site works at all zoom levels up to 400% without loss of content or functionality
  • Language attribute — The lang="en" attribute is set on every page so screen readers use the correct pronunciation
  • Reduced motion — All animations are disabled for users with the prefers-reduced-motion setting enabled
  • Mobile accessibility — Touch targets are at least 44×44px; the site works with iOS VoiceOver and Android TalkBack

Known Limitations

While we strive for full WCAG 2.1 AA conformance, there are some areas we are actively working to improve:

Area Issue Status
YouTube embeds Embedded YouTube videos are controlled by Google and may not fully meet WCAG AA. Captions depend on YouTube's auto-generated or manually added captions. Third-party
Event calendar The month calendar view uses a custom grid. We continue to test and improve keyboard navigation within the calendar. In progress
Video captions Live show streams may not have real-time captions. Recorded episodes on YouTube include auto-generated captions which we encourage viewers to enable. In progress
Third-party images Sponsor and non-profit logos sourced from partner websites may lack descriptive alt text on their original hosting. We provide alt text where possible. Monitored

We conduct accessibility reviews whenever significant changes are made to the site and address identified issues as quickly as possible.

Third-Party Content

Some content on this site is provided by third-party platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. We do not control the accessibility of these external services. We encourage users who experience accessibility barriers with embedded third-party content to use the native platforms directly, where additional accessibility settings may be available.

Links to third-party sites open in a new tab and are labeled with target="_blank" and rel="noopener noreferrer" for security. We include aria-label attributes on social media links to clarify their destination.
